When people think of the term medical health field the first word that comes to their mind is the word 'doctor' or 'blood'. They hardly tend to think beyond that. And because of this, they always prefer that they do not choose the medical field.
On the other hand, there are people who are getting fascinated with the medical field by watching the hit medical series- ER, House M.D., and Gray's Anatomy. They think that the doctors of these series have an interesting life that they tend to forget that the life is not as easy as it seems on television.
When you think about your future, and what you would want to be when you grow up, it is a big decision. It takes a lot of thinking and a lot of firm decisions to go into the medical field. Here are some of the things that you need to think before you embark into the medical field.
What subjects were interesting to you?
That is the primary question. Were you interested in the Sciences? Was it fascinating? Did you get through the Sciences without a difficulty, when the others were finding it hard to get through with a pass grade? If you were interested in Biology,Chemistry, and Physics, medical billing and coding and got good grades in them in college, then the medical field would definitely be an interesting decision.
Are you people-oriented?
This is the next important question. If you are interested in helping other people, then the medical field is a good choice. This is not pertaining to the doctors alone; this also includes the other medical professionals such as nurses and paramedics. Sometimes you might not be able to put up with death all the time; the hospice environment is not the choice you should make. You could get into the pediatric department and help with the children. Ultimately, you need to have the ability to help the patients in their suffering.
Are you financially prepared?
It takes a lot of money to earn a medical degree. If you are still determined to get a medical degree, make sure that you look far ahead, and start saving money from as early as possible. The medical degree will cost you several thousands of dollars and hence it is always a better idea to save up money.
Time:
This is a two pronged question. The amount of time that you need to spend to earn your medical degree and the amount of time you will spend with the patients will wear anyone down. You will need to put in at least 10 hours per day on your academics, and at least 15-20 years to earn the degree that you are interested in. If you are still interested in pursuing the education, then you are right for the medical profession. If you feel that you want to help the people in the medical field, but cannot spend a lot of time studying, then you could aim for a job like the physician's assistant, or the head nurse position, which will help you have your time as well as help patients out as you wished.
After you earn the medical degree, the amount of time you spend with your patients will definitely be more than the amount of time that you spend with your family. Some people will decide not to have a family to pursue their passion. Others choose to go for a medical technician job or something like that which will help them help patients as well as spend adequate time with their family. This question is a difficult question to answer so easily. It definitely takes a lot of time to answer but if you are ready to choose the medical profession, then go ahead. You are truly made for the profession!
